Empire Earth – In real life

The Game

Empire Earth 3 is the last game in the Empire earth franchise.  It was developed by Mad Doc Software and published by Vivendi Games.  The games were released in November 2007.  The game garnered poor reviews at the time of release.  You can read more about the reception of this game further down on this page.

The first two games in the series were more realistic.  This game changed that formula and was more cartoonish.   Most gamers would have preferred that the game continued with the more realistic tone of the prequels.

The game is a real-time strategy game where you battle against other civilizations.   The game stretches over five different time periods. These are Ancient, Medieval, Colonial, Modern, and Future. The previous games allowed the player to play more different time periods.  The game feature a number of different civilizations. All civilization plays slightly different and can build different units and buildings. Everyone can find a civilization that suits there style of gaming.

All of these civilizations belong to one of the three main factions of the game. These factions are Middle Eastern, Western, and Far Eastern.

Gameplay

The game plays similarly to other historical Real-time strategy games.  The goal of the game is to achieve world domination to do this you have to conquer all the territories on the map.  There are many different territories in the game that you will need to conquer to win the game.  New territories are unlooked as you conquer territories.   There are some variations of what your objectives are in different areas.

In most areas, the goal is to defeat the enemy. To do this you need to build a city (base) filled with buildings that help you gather more resources and build military units.  You also need to build defences.  Once you have done this it is time to move out on the map and take the battle to your enemy.  Different military units have different strength and weaknesses and it is up to you to use your army in the best possible way to be able to defeat the enemy in the area.

Development and release

The development of Empire Earth began in 2005. The game uses the same game engine as the previous game but the engine was heavily modified to create Empire Earth 3. The game was released November 6, 2007. An important patch was released two days after release. This patch fixed some important issues.

Reception

The game was poorly received by both reviewers and the general public.  This is in part due to the decision to dumb the game down and make it more cartoonish and less realistic.  It did no longer provide the same type of challenge.  Below you can read some examples of what reviewers had to say.
